8:30 – The Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare returned its final report yesterday, recommending a universal, single-payer public pharmacare system be established across Canada. The council, led by former Ontario Liberal Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins, wants Canadians given access to drugs from a national formulary with “essential medicines” costing $2 and other drugs costing $5 to a maximum of $100/year. The full program is expected to cost more than $15B/year by the year 2027 (which is when the Council expected the formulary could be implemented). Saskatchewan Health Minister Jim Reiter says he’s still looking at the recommendations, but wants to know more about Ottawa’s funding plans before making any firm decisions. The provincial NDP, however, called on the government to support the single-payer plan in principle. Reiter joins John now to discuss pharmacare in Saskatchewan and his initial thoughts on the national proposal.

11:00 – Plant-based burger producer Beyond Meat has taken off like a rocket, and with their products added to more than 4,000 Tim Horton’s locations for breakfast sandwiches, the only question is whether their supply can keep up with the huge demand. But many are still wary of the soy- and pulse-based patties, especially because they advertise as “plant-based meat” instead of “veggie burgers” or something that more clearly describes their products. What do you think about the growing trend towards plant-based alternatives to animal protein? Will plant-based products ever replace meat altogether? Give us a call and tell us what you think!
