A brand-new BMX track set to open in Warman has been designed by one of the best BMX bikers in the world.
The City of Warman worked with Olympic athlete Trent Jones on the design. Jones, who’s from New Zealand, is among the top ten BMX bikers in the world.
He said it was incredibly rewarding to watch it all come together.
“It wasn’t that long ago when I was in the same boat, where I grew up in a small town, we had a little BMX track that wasn’t that good,” Jones said.
Niall Schofield is with the Diamond BMX Club.
“It’s the first track he ever built in Canada, so it’s a historic moment in support of BMX in Canada,” Schofield said.
He said he’s been involved with BMX for most of my life, since he was 7, and he has personally never seen a track like this.
“We’ve got some really great material. It’s going to be super-smooth. The berms are magnificent. The shape of the track is magnificent,” Schofield said.
He said it will be used by people of all ages, growing the sport.
“From five (years old) to adult, and it gives the foundation for future Olympians,” Schofield said.
Total cost to build the new track is about $500,000; the money was raised entirely through private sponsorship.
The new track opens on Tuesday.
