Sandra LaRose is speaking out after losing her daughter to what she believes was distracted driving.
Kailynn Bursic-Panchuk, 17, was driving a car that collided with a train in August. Her story is to be the focus of SGI’s new ad campaign, “Distracted driving kills,” as well as its traffic safety spotlight for the month of June.
The campaign includes a 60-second video that will be broadcast provincewide on television, online and in cinemas starting this weekend. LaRose did the voiceover for the spot.
“She was a smart girl, and I need people to realize it can happen to anybody,” LaRose, who lives near Francis, said of her daughter. “If it happened to her, it can happen to anybody.”
LaRose joined Drew Remenda on Gormley Live on Thursday to discuss the memory of her daughter, and how the ad campaign came to be.
LaRose said just a few days after the crash, she made the decision that she was going to speak out.
“I remember telling my husband, ‘If her phone had anything to do with this, I’m not keeping quiet,’ ” LaRose said.
Since Kailynn’s death, the family has set up a scholarship at Weyburn Comprehensive High School to continue her memory.
LaRose said Kailynn is with her on this campaign, and she believes her daughter is the one who keeps her going every day, and helped her through the campaign.
“I think wherever she is now, she’s with me on this and she’s pushing me on this,” LaRose said.
Kailynn signed her donor card following the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy in April of 2018, and LaRose said her daughter’s actions saved the lives of three people.
