Canada isn’t used to having professional basketball this late into the season.
The Toronto Raptors’ first-ever run to the NBA Finals and the presence of the Canadian Elite Basketball League make this spring unique in many ways.
The Saskatchewan Rattlers will continue into late August and for one member of the team, the Raptors’ run is especially sweet.
Power forward Negus Webster-Chan played for the NBA G League’s Raptors 905 from 2016 to 2018, and during that time he shared the court with current Raptors Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet and Malcolm Miller.
“It’s a great thing to see (where) they’re at right now. I definitely think it’s a good matchup in the finals,” Webster-Chan said.
Webster-Chan said the three current Raptors were great leaders who put in their work and are being rewarded for putting in their time to get to that next level.
The Scarborough product said he spent time going to games in his younger years, and to see the Raptors make it this far is something special.
“It shows you how hard they’ve been working over the years,” he said. “It’s big for the city because we (haven’t) seen anything like that.”
Game 1 of the best-of-seven NBA championship series is set for Thursday, when the Raptors are to welcome the Golden State Warriors to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
