Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is closing the door on Erin Weir returning to the party caucus.
The Regina-Lewvan MP was ousted last year after allegations surfaced of harassment against party staffers.
Singh said the decision was made as a caucus to ensure safety within the party and there’s no going back on it.
“I wish him well in the future,” Singh said during a stop in Saskatoon on Thursday. “He’s not going to be a candidate, and there’s no future at this point.”
Weir, who has been sitting as an independent, announced this week he’s not running in the upcoming election.
Weir said Singh continues to block his candidacy despite support from people in Saskatchewan.
Singh said Weir will be replaced by an equally strong candidate and isn’t concerned that losing a sitting MP will hurt the party’s chances this fall.
“We’re looking forward to having a strong campaign across Saskatchewan,” Singh said. “Particularly where we’ve held seats before, we’re looking to regain and keep those seats.”
As for Weir, he will continue to be interested in public policy, but said he won’t run for another party.
