The province has announced this year’s recipients of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
The award is the highest honour the province can bestow and goes to those who have made significant contributions in areas such as art, science, public service and business.
This year, six new members will join the 235 others invested into the order since it was established in 1985.
The 2019 Order of Merit recipients are:
— Don Atchison, former mayor of Saskatoon who served from 2003 to 2016, making him the longest-tenured mayor in the city’s history;
— Doug Cuthand, a Saskatoon-based columnist with the Postmedia newspaper chain;
— Lyn Goldman, a Regina-based philanthropist who has supported the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the redevelopment of the University of Regina’s College Avenue Campus;
— Grit McCreath, an author and educator noted for her public service work with the Waskesiu Foundation and the University of Saskatchewan;
— Dr. Andy Potter, a medical researcher and former director and CEO of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization – International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) in Saskatoon; and,
— Dr. William Francis Ready, a prominent Regina lawyer who has also served as president of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and chair of the Regina Citizens’ Advisory of the Salvation Army.
The six recipients will officially be invested into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit by Lt.-Gov. W. Thomas Molloy at a ceremony in June.
