In March of 2013, the CFL signed a new television deal with TSN.
It was worth 2 1/2 times more than the previous agreement. At that time, the CFL Players’ Association had hoped the salary cap would reflect that.
Well, in 2014, the cap went from $4.4 million to $5 million which, when divided up among close to 500 players, isn’t much in my opinion.
In 2019, the association is digging in as the current collective bargaining agreement expires in about a month.
While there are lots of issues to discuss, labour negotiations always seem to come down to what makes the world go around, and that’s money.
It has been reported that some of the highest-paid quarterbacks are making as much as $200,000 more than they were five years ago, while the minimum salary hasn’t gone up much at all.
The players know the owners have it, and now want it. With the minimum salary being $60,000, I can’t blame them.
