Simply put, Martensville has outgrown its hockey arena.
“Definitely in a pinch for ice, but we also understand there are other needs for the community. This is us trying to be prepare and be proactive,” said Jesse Reis, chair of the Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP).
For the past five years the MCRP have been fundraising toward a new facility.
On April 7th the group celebrated a milestone with the unveiling of the preliminary drawings and floor plan for a multi-purpose recreational facility.
Reis said for the first time people can see the vision they are trying to create.
“When your just a small community group trying to fundraise through events. You don’t see the big picture,” Reis said.
“We see the end. It’s slowly becoming a reality.”
The first phase of the project — an arena, leisure ice, spectator seating, indoor playground and climbing wall — will cost approximately $12 million.
Future phases will include a second and third arena, indoor field turf and multi-purpose rooms.
Reis said the facility is designed to be constructed in multiple phases over a number of years, as funding is available. The city recently contributed $6.5 million toward the project.
Reis said a location and additional funding are still needed before construction can begin, which he notes is still several years away.
