8:30 – Independent MP Jane Philpott is alleging she and Jody Wilson-Raybould were improperly removed from the Liberal caucus. On Tuesday Philpott told the speaker of the House of Commons their rights as MPs were violated when they were unilaterally removed from the LPC caucus by Justin Trudeau last week. Philpott argued their removal without a vote violated federal law, specifically the Parliament of Canada Act. Michael Chong, MP for Wellington, was instrumental in updating the Parliament of Canada Act in 2015 through a private member’s bill. Under the updated rules, 20% of caucus must submit a written notice to review an MP’s membership, and a secret ballot majority vote is required to make the removal. Chong joins Gormley now to discuss the latest twist in the SNC-Lavalin affair, and whether he believes federal law was broken.
