On more than one occasion this past weekend, Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean hinted that he would like to see Bob Cole do play-by-play for the 20-plus Sunday broadcasts of Rogers Hometown Hockey starting next season.
That’s not likely to happen after Saturday’s big sendoff at the Bell Centre. Cole called his final NHL game, 50 years after he called his first one.
His NHL debut on radio was in 1969 and his television debut was in 1973. From Jean Beliveau to Paul Byron, from Ken Hodge to Ron Hainsey, Cole has brought us great moments, and has introduced us to great stars.
He has been there from Howe to McDavid, and everything in between. At 85 years of age, Cole isn’t the playcaller that he was 30 years ago. However, it’s still a comfort to a country to hear his voice.
Bob Cole is truly the soundtrack of Saturday night. I, like many other Canadians, could make Sunday work.
