Saskatoon’s public transit system can now better accommodate people with reduced mobility.
On Thursday, the city announced its public transit fleet is now 100 per cent accessible with buses able to kneel or equipped with ramps.
“We want all of our customers to have safe, convenient, and affordable transit options,” said Jim McDonald, director of Saskatoon Transit in a news release.
“We are continually working to improve our service and are extremely proud of reaching this milestone.”
The city said a $24-million dollar shared investment by the city and federal government toward the purchase of 41 accessible low-floor buses and nine specialized buses with wheelchair lifts, allowed the city reach the milestone.
“By removing barriers to transportation, we enable access to education and employment,” said David Arnot, Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.
