I’m not sure if this is what CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie had in mind when he thought about keeping the league in the news cycle in the off-season.
A 3DownNation weekend report said the CFL and the players’ association were in discussions about dropping the number of Canadian starters from seven to five, while adding two “global” spots to the roster.
The media and fan debate then began. Some central-Canadian media types look for any opportunity to bash the CFL. This report gave them fodder.
There are some fans who have a legitimate argument that players such as Andrew Harris and Brent Johnson would have never received a chance had a Canadian ratio not been in place.
There are others who believe that the best players would make for the best product.
At the end of the day, this debate about dropping the number of national starters from seven to five is just that, a debate. It’s a conversation that’s front and centre now, but won’t be in the markets where football matters when the 2019 season gets underway.
