The family of a Kindersley man who died outside the Saskatoon Cancer Centre on the University of Saskatchewan campus is helping the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency fix its policies.
In late February a 60-year-old man suffered a heart attack while picking up his mother from cancer treatment.
Staff told his elderly mother to call 911 for help.
“We’re taking the steps to ensure that this doesn’t happen again,” cancer agency CEO Dr. Jon Tonita told 650 CKOM.
He said the agency spoke to the family to go over its internal review of the death, gaps in current policy and what can change.
According to Tonita, the policy went into effect in 2010.
He couldn’t elaborate on the specific policy gaps being addressed, citing patient confidentiality.
“People are not to leave a current patient or situation to go outside,” Tonita explained. “If required (they can) phone for assistance.”
Despite the policy, Tonita said the agency and family agree things should have been different.
“We did agree, we (the cancer centre) should have called 911.”
Tonita explained that while the family is helping with the policy, they would like to stay out of the media for the time being.
