The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball season came down to one final shot in the U Sports Women’s Final 8 bronze medal game in Toronto on Sunday.
Saskatchewan was trailing by one point with 18 seconds left as a missed pass caused a panic when players from both the Huskies and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees wrestled for control. Saskatchewan controlled the ball in time, but the game-winning shot rattled off the rim, handing Ottawa the bronze medal with a 63-62 win.
Sabine Dukate led the Huskies with 15 points in a loss that can be attributed to the team’s third quarter showing.
With the team holding a 41-27 lead at the half, Saskatchewan’s accuracy disappeared in the third quarter as the Gee-Gees outscored the Huskies 21-6 in the frame. Saskatchewan shot just 2-19 in the quarter to see Ottawa take 21 of the game’s next 24 points and a 48-47 lead.
Both teams jawed back and forth in the fourth quarter before Saskatchewan’s dramatic final effort of the game.
The Huskies failed to win the program’s fifth medal in the loss.
Saskatchewan has made it to the national semifinal seven of the last eight seasons.
