In December 2018 a photo of bison covered in hoarfrost started to gain popularity online.
By February the photo by Melville area photographer Tracy Kerestesh was selected by National Geographic for a daily feature.
“After 38-years of shooting I’ve never had anything like this happen,” Kerestech said.
But she says the photo didn’t catch the editors eye right away.
“I entered that photograph in the National Geographic ‘your shot’ (in December), it did nothing,” she said. “I was a little disappointed.”
Everything seemed to change when an editor commented on the photo on the publications website in February.
According to Kerestech, more people started to like and comment on it.
Then on Feb. 15, the photo was selected to be part of the Daily Dozen feature.
Kerestech says since the photo was featured she has received compliments and congratulations from around the world.
“I’ve never had one (photo) that has blown up this much I just feel really blessed.”
