Over 150 semi trucks have left Red Deer in a bid to make the federal government pay more attention to the struggles of Western Canada’s oil and gas sector.
The United We Roll for Canada convoy is making its way to Ottawa in a line of rigs put out of service by layoffs in the energy industry, using money from crowdfunding campaigns to pay for gas, food and hotels for the drivers.
They plan to collect more convoy members as the group moves eastward, with some planning to join when the line of trucks makes its way through Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario.
Organizer Glen Carritt told Gormley Thursday the hope is to have hundreds of trucks roll in front of Parliament Hill next week.
“We need to make them realize this is important for the whole country,” he said.
“It’s not just Alberta, it’s not just Saskatchewan. It’s the whole country that depends on the oil and gas sector.”
The convoy is expected to make its way through Regina later Thursday before stopping in White City for the night. There, they’ll be joined by a Saskatchewan contingent of supporters for the rest of the journey to Ottawa.
Local convoys in oil towns like Estevan and Grand Prairie, Alta. have gathered large numbers in recent months.
But Carritt said they need to bring those gatherings to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s front steps to make an impact.
“They’re not listening to us out here,” he said. “We can drive around in circles 24/7, 365 (days a year), and the current government has never paid attention.”
