A man accused of breaking into a home under construction in the Brevoort Park neighbourhood is recovering from a police dog bite after allegedly trying to flee from officers.
Police were called around 1 p.m. Sunday with a report of a break-and-enter in progress on the 1500 block of Early Dr.
A witness reportedly noticed property missing from the home and began following the suspect. The man reportedly got into a van and drove away, then crashed into a snowbank on Louise Avenue.
Two Saskatoon police officers arrived at the scene and tried to arrest the man. An officer was injured during the ensuing struggle. The suspect then ran off on foot after a taser failed to bring him down.
A police canine unit tracked the 33-year-old man to a backyard shed on the 1600 block of Sommerfeld Avenue.
The suspect was checked at the scene by paramedics after suffering a dog bite. He was then taken to the police holding cells.
Police said the officer injured during the incident was taken to hospital for assessment.
