An Arctic air mass caused temperatures to plummet Tuesday morning through most of Saskatchewan.
Environment Canada had extreme cold warnings in place for both Saskatoon and Regina, with both cities expected to see wind chills pushing into the -40 C range. Warnings were also in effect for the entire north and central portions of the province, as well as the southeast.
People were advised to bundle up and keep supplies like blankets and jumper cables in their vehicles.
The weather service also urged pet owners to keep their animals inside during the cold spell.
Temperatures were expected to come up gradually through the day on Wednesdays.
Bus service was cancelled for both Saskatoon’s public and Catholic elementary schools as well as in the Prairie Spirit School Division. While bus service was cancelled, schools themselves were to remain open.
