Wray Morrison: Looking outside and forward

Sportsnet’s John Shannon tweeted some potential candidates for the job of Oilers GM on Wednesday. Kings assistant GM Mike Futa and Golden Knights assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon were two of the names on the list. While there is little reason for Oilers fans to be happy right now, they should hope that this team brings new blood into the organization. I still believe that owner Daryl Katz made the right move in hiring Bob Nicholson as CEO and vice-chair of the Oilers Entertainment Group nearly four years ago.

As the former head of Hockey Canada, Nicholson is well connected. Yes, I realize that the Chiarelli hiring didn’t work out.

It’s up to owner Daryl Katz and Nicholson to make winning a priority over sentiment. The Oilers Entertainment Group still employs Wayne Gretzky, Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish, who all have a place in Oilers history. However, the Edmonton brass has to look ahead and outside of the organization to end this futility.
