Nathan Oystrick is stepping away from coaching and managing the Humboldt Broncos, after taking over the team in the wake of April’s deadly bus crash.
Oystrick announced he was stepping away on Twitter Friday morning.
“Despite the extreme stress and constant pressure of working with the organization, I gave them everything I possibly could and am proud of their performance, and mine, this season,” he wrote.
In a statement Friday afternoon, the Broncos said Oystrick and the team “decided to part ways,” but no further information was provided.
The release said assistant coach Scott Barney, who also joined the team in the summer, would take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Oystrick, a former NHL player born in Regina, joined the team as head coach and general manager in July and helped the rebuilding Broncos to a 21-13-2-1 record by the holiday break.
He took over after head coach Darcy Haugan and 15 other members of the Broncos were killed April 6, when their team bus collided with a semi at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 near Melfort.
Requests for comment made to Oystrick were not immediately returned.
