Cam Fuller, who spent nearly 30 years as a humour columnist and arts editor at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper, has died of liver complications arising from ulcerative colitis.
Fuller died Wednesday in an Edmonton hospital with his family by his side. He’d gone to the city in October in hopes of getting a liver transplant. However, he eventually became too sick for the operation. He was 55.
StarPhoenix editor Heather Persson shared some memories of her colleague Thursday with Gormley.
“Anyone who writes knows that writing humour is absolutely the most difficult thing, and he made that look effortless,” she said.
Along with his ability as a writer, Person praised Fuller’s skills as an editor.
“He could take something so rough and make it so beautiful and that was just another outlet for his brilliance and his command of the language.”
Persson said Fuller also worked to pass on his skills to the rest of the newsroom.
“I think what people don’t know about him is how much influence he had in terms of the writing and development of young writers,” she said.
Fuller is survived by his wife, Donella Hoffman and sons William and Joseph.
