A very good NHL coach is on the market.
Todd McLellan was cut loose by the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday after a shaky 9-10 and 1 start to the season.
I can’t imagine how frustrating the last five years have been for Edmonton fans.
It was thought that when Bob Nicholson went to the Oilers in 2013, he would be responsible for a culture change as the new CEO of the Oilers Entertainment Group.
In 2015 the team hired GM Peter Chiarelli. It looked as if the team had turned the corner in 2017, as the Oilers got to within a win of the western conference final.
However, a 36 win campaign last year makes 2017 seem so long ago.
It’s a team that is stuck with a huge Milan Lucic contract, a team that had no other choice than to put its two top scorers on the same line to generate any sort of offense and a hockey operations department that from a distance appears to meddle in coaches decisions.
Something is broken in Edmonton, and it’ll take more than a coaching change to fix it.
