A 32-year-old Saskatchewan man is facing several charges of fraud after allegedly starting a GoFundMe campaign profiting off the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.
Saskatoon RCMP said in a release Wednesday they began investigating on Oct. 3 after reports of investor fraud by a company under the name of Aero Capital Inc.
In the course of the investigation, evidence was discovered of a fraudulent GoFundMe page titled “#PrayForHumboldt.”
The page had raised $3,800 from 35 people — 21 from Canada and 14 from the U.S. — before being closed down.
RCMP told 650 CKOM the GoFundMe contributors have been notified, but they didn’t get their money back.
Andrij Olesiuk, 32, was arrested on Tuesday with assistance from Martensville RCMP and Prince Albert RCMP.
He faces one count each of fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and laundering proceeds of crime.
Olesiuk made his first court appearance Wednesday in Saskatoon and is scheduled to return Dec. 12.
