Berkly Catton, Brayden Yager, Caden Price and Tanner Howe were all named.
The citizens have spoken. In all, 56.4% of Calgarians said “no” to pursuing the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Before I start, let me say I do respect the process. The Alberta economy isn’t the strongest right now and there is always a chance of cost overruns when you are talking about an event that is eight years away.
The peoples’ wishes have been taken in to consideration. That’s a good thing.
However, I don’t understand the stance of those who say this should send a message to the International Olympic Committee. The IOC isn’t my favourite organization by any means, and yes they have proven to be corrupt at times.
But the 2026 Games are still going to happen. Another major city will host the event and the IOC will benefit, just as they would have if the games were to be held in Calgary.
What Calgarians should have considered in voting is the benefits and setbacks of hosting the games in their city. The vote not to support a bid does not have a major impact on the IOC.
