The union for Saskatoon Co-Op workers is warning a strike could start this week.
Over 900 employees represented by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1400 could walk off the job after midnight on Nov. 1.
The union reportedly served strike notice Monday.
The affected workers include employees at Co-Op grocery stores, gas stations, Agro centres, home centres and liquor stores.
The union identified a proposal by Saskatoon Co-Op to institute lower wages for new hires as the main issue behind the potential job action.
Saskatoon Co-Op CEO Grant Wicks said most locations will stay open during a strike, but customers will notice an impact.
“We won’t be able to provide every service that we normally do,” Wicks said, adding reduced store hours and converting gas bars to self-service are on the table.
For the town of Colonsay, east of Saskatoon, a strike could effect how residents get their groceries. Wicks said they have a commitment to those communities and will be doing all they can to keep the doors open in the event of a strike.
