Tonight is about moving forward. However, the best path ahead is always based on where we have been in the past.
Humboldt Broncos General Manager and head coach Nathan Oystrick is now responsible for a team that, less than a year ago, endured a tragedy most of us will never know.
Former coach and GM Darcy Haugan, who died in the April 6th bus crash, had a well-publicized Broncos’ “Core Covenant” in writing on a board in the team’s dressing room.
Some of the messages were to be thankful, to have honesty and integrity, to have respect and the one that jumps out at me on this day is to “always give more than you take.”
Oystrick made it clear to me that the board will never leave the dressing room.
Yes, it serves as a great tribute to Haugan, but as Oystrick points out, it has a great message.
Even though Darcy Haugan lost his life 159 days ago, his Broncos’ “Core Covenant” is still inspiring players and people.
Give more than you take, indeed.
