Saskatchewan New Democrats want details about discussions between the government and legal aid that resulted in upcoming cuts to the Saskatoon legal aid office.
However, justice critic Nicole Sarauer said Tuesday a freedom of information request regarding that matter has been denied. She added the justice minister has some explaining to do.
“The buck ultimately stops with minister Morgan. It’s his job to ensure that we have a strong justice system, it’s his job to ensure that we have access to justice in this province,” she said.
Sarauer said people deserve to know what’s going on because the consequences of these cuts and the potential for more could be massive.
“Not only are we losing jobs, but we’re also losing expediency in the justice system.”
Come September, the Saskatoon office of legal aid will eliminate six support staff and another three positions will remain vacant.
According to the NDP, the cuts show a disregard for the entire legal community.
