Saskatchewan cattle producers deal with drought

Devastating is how a Gull Lake area rancher describes the dry conditions in his region of the province.

Rick Toney says the drought means a lack of quality pasture land which means a lack of feed for his 500 head of cattle.

That’s forcing him to consider making some difficult decisions such as “….reducing our cow herd for the winter depending on how our feed stocks are being found.”

Livestock producers are still waiting to hear from the federal government on a request for a livestock tax deferral.

If approved, they could defer a portion of their sale proceeds from this year to next year to avoid a tax hit.
