The relationship between media and professional athletes is always changing.
Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman had to do some damage control on Twitter after being quoted as saying, “we’re terrible” on Sunday.
A quote that, on its own, wouldn’t sit well with teammates or management.
Stroman then went to Twitter and said the whole quote was, “I’m terrible right now. We’re terrible RIGHT NOW.”
In that context, the message is different.
He was also frustrated about being asked a question that had nothing to do with the 5-2 loss that the Jays had just suffered.
In television, it’s called the money shot. In this case, this is about the money quote.
“We’re terrible” — that’s good click bait.
In a world of 280 characters, and shorter attention spans, it’s more important than ever that some media members properly represent athletes, in stories, and in lead lines.
