Soccer, has not, is not, and likely never will be my sport of choice.
There is a reason for that. I wasn’t around it enough in my formative years. Being born and raised in this country decades ago, the sport I watched was hockey. The sport I was somewhat decent at was basketball (by no means was I a star).
In sport, participation and fan following are two different things. Lots of Saskatchewanians ride their bikes, that doesn’t mean Tour de France TV numbers are off the charts.
Our province is getting more diverse, which is a good thing. It also means the fan following for the world’s most popular game is growing here.
If soccer has always been your sport, enjoy the run up to the World Cup final. If you’re a long time resident of this province who hasn’t watched much soccer, tune in.
It may not equal the excitement of a Grey Cup or a Stanley Cup, but it’s still pretty good.
