Three men have been charged in the death of a 43-year-old inmate who was hurt during a riot at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.
Staff found Jason Bird unresponsive in the prison’s medium security unit on Dec. 14, 2016. The discovery came in the aftermath of a major disturbance that saw several other inmates injured and 14 charged with participating in a riot.
Bird was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
RCMP announced Monday that an 18-month investigation had led them to charge Kelfert Wayne Watetch, 28, Landon Bryce McKay, 21 and Brandon Wyatt Burns, 23 with second-degree murder.
The three also face charges of attempted murder for an alleged assault against a 31-year-old inmate who was also attacked during the 2016 riot.
All three men appeared Monday morning in Prince Albert Provincial Court.
Police said the investigation remains open and they expect to lay more charges.
