Heat warnings for northern Sask. as warm weather moves in

Environment Canada is expecting a hot week in Saskatchewan.

The weather service issued heat warnings Monday morning for areas in the northern part of the province, focused around La Loche, La Ronge and Île à la Crosse.

The warnings stated daily highs were expected to reach or exceed 29 C every day until at least Thursday, with overnight lows expected to stay at or above 14 C.

People were advised to try and plan outdoor activities for cooler times of day, drink plenty of water and to take frequent breaks from the heat.

Parents and pet owners were reminded not to leave children or animals inside hot vehicles for any length of time.

The warnings also noted the increased risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion due to the warmer weather. Symptoms of those conditions include high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness.

Children, seniors and people who suffer from diabetes, lung disease or other medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

The warm weather was expected to extend to much of the province, with high temperatures expected to crack the 30 C mark in Saskatoon by Thursday.

In Regina, forecasts called for temperatures in the high 20’s through most of the week.
