The Lethbridge Hurricanes WHL team is reeling after an incident northwest of Calgary involving two current players and a former player.
According to RCMP, a substance placed in a firepit caused an explosion Friday night in the Bearspaw area, 10 kilometres east of Cochrane.
Hurricanes Jordy Bellerive and Ryan Vandervlis and former Hurricane Matt Alfaro were hurt.
Local media reports had suggested the incident happened during a bachelor party. However, a statement issued Monday by the team said those reports were inaccurate.
The release said the fire was held at the family home of former WHLer Tyler Wong in the evening, ahead of plans to spend the next day golfing.
The team reported Alfaro and Bellerive are currently in stable condition, with Vandervlis in a medically-induced coma and listed in critical condition.
The team media release also included a statement from Vandervlis’ family.
“Our son and brother, Ryan Vandervlis, was injured at a bonfire this past weekend. We want to be clear that alcohol was not a factor in this accident,” they wrote, before praising staff caring for Vendervlis at a hospital in Calgary.
