This was a terrific change to the CFL rule book: Illegal contact on a receiver can no longer be a play coaches can challenge.
Earlier this week the league’s board of governors approved the change which was forwarded from the rules committee earlier this year
It never did make sense to me to enable a coach to challenge contact between a receiver and a defender when the ball was thrown to the opposite side of the field. If one of seven officials doesn’t catch something which happened yards from where the ball was thrown, then let’s keep playing.
I realize that every sport is trying to find the balance between video use and pace, however these challenges slowed the game down, both at the park and on television.
The numerous officials that are on the field for CFL games are well trained and are among the best in football on either side of the border. It’s wise to let the human element of officials prevail when it comes to illegal contact.
