I have a question for the biggest hockey fans out there: Does anyone remember which country won gold at the World Men’s Hockey Championships last year?
I am guessing many didn’t know, and those who knew had to think about it for a minute.
So it goes with an event that in North America plays second to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
I’m more engaged in this year’s event than in the past for two reasons. I’m looking forward to seeing 21-year-old Connor McDavid captain a team of super stars from across the country.
We all know he is talented and we all know he is the leader of the Oilers. I can’t wait to see him lead Canada in a tournament where each game has such urgency.
I’m also looking forward how new Flames coach Bill Peters manages a bench of talented players.
I realize Peters has coached in the NHL for seven seasons, but now that he is in Calgary, this tournament may give us an indication of his style.
By the way, the answer is Sweden — who beat Canada in a shootout.
