The Saskatoon Blades announced that former captain and leader on the blueline Evan Fiala has signed a pro contract with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.
Fiala is expected to wear the number 16 jersey for the Stingrays when they take on the Orlando Solar Bears tonight.
Fiala finished the season among the league leaders in penalty minutes with 151 in 71 games played to go along with a career-best 20 points.
Carolina is an affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
Draft order decided
Kootenay Ice won the WHL Bantam Draft Lottery on Wednesday, allowing them to move up two spots in May’s draft and select second overall.
Saskatoon stays put, selecting sixth after narrowly missing out on the playoffs once again.
The Edmonton Oil Kings will select first after finishing the season with a 22-42-6-2 record.
Prince Albert will select after Kootenay, with Calgary and Kamloops rounding out the top five.
The order of every round after the first will be the reverse order of final 2017-18 WHL regular season standings.
