Students at Venture Heights Elementary School in Martensville don’t have their cell phones to distract them in the classroom—they aren’t allowed.
According to principal Ron Biberdorf, they started the push against cell phones in class last fall, mainly focusing on the Grade 8 students.
So far, he said the feedback from students is positive and they’re noticing “much less drama.”
Biberdorf told 650 CKOM the high school in the community, just north of Saskatoon, doesn’t allow phones either so it’s a good way to prepare the students going into Grade 9.
While it’s not the only elementary school testing out a moratorium on phones, Biberdorf said it is getting some attention.
“I’m getting a lot of emails and phone calls from principals all over the province asking simply for the research we’ve been utilizing or the correspondence we’ve been sending to parents,” he said.
When it comes to teachers, Biberdorf said they’re ditching cell phones too—with a few exceptions.
“They sometimes have work to do that requires technology,” Biberdorf said. “But it’s not like teachers are flaunting that they have cell phones, we try to keep it behind closed doors.”
He clarified that students are welcome to bring their phones to school with them, but they have to be kept in lockers during the day.
