Hockey’s ugly side came to the forefront in last night’s Montreal and Dallas game.
Andrew Shaw of the Canadiens, who is known for his physical play, needed teammates help him off the ice after putting what appeared to be a late hit on Greg Pateryn of the Stars. Pateryn cleared the puck out of the Dallas zone when Shaw made contact with the unsuspecting Star. Their heads seemed to collide. Shaw laid on the ice for several moments before getting help.
Pateryn was asked for his take on the play and had some interesting quotes.
“There is a reason why a guy like that gets four or five concussions a year,” he said. For the record, Shaw was diagnosed with two concussions last season, but that’s two too many.
Pateryn added, “His eyes were in the back of his head. His play speaks for itself. When you play like that, that’s what happens.”
Shaw’s reckless play has harmed himself and that’s sad, but he is a seven-year veteran who needs to have more respect for opposing players and for himself.
