Now that the CFL’s free-agent frenzy has slowed, have the Saskatchewan Roughriders made themselves better by adding players like Zack Evans, Travis Bond and Jerome Messam?
Well, the team also lost veterans Nic Demski, Greg Morris, Esa Mrabure and Otha Foster. All were solid CFLers.
Plus the Riders dumped expensive linebacker Henoc Muamba and offensive lineman Derek Dennis, both starters, to make room for the newcomers under the CFL-mandated salary cap.
The Roughriders’ biggest moves came before free agency, when they traded for quarterback Zach Collaros and defensive end Charleston Hughes.
It’s a familiar pattern across the CFL: a few players in, a few players out and the Calgary Stampeders making very few moves. A few salaries get leaked. All the pundits are busy picking the winners and losers of free agency, but until midway through next season, nobody will know if the moves have helped or hurt.
