Ottawa Senators forward Alex Burrows was given a 10 game suspension on Wednesday for putting a knee to the head of New Jersey’s Taylor Hall on Tuesday night.
Burrows has only been suspended one other time in his career, so 10 games may seem severe.
From what I’ve seen on video, the NHL got this one right. Burrows was hit by Hall, then Burrows chased Hall down, wrestled him to the ice and kneed him in the head while the two were both down.
With what we know about the brain now, there is no way the league could have let a knee to the head go unpunished.
All a hockey fan has to do is visit YouTube to see that the game of hockey used to be much rougher. There were many more fights, and there were many more incidents after a whistle. However, the game has evolved for the better.
Good on the league for making sure detrimental steps, like the one we saw Tuesday, aren’t going to be the norm.
