It’s the highest civilian honour in Canada and its being bestowed on four Saskatchewan residents.
Governor General Julie Payette has announced 125 new appointments to the Order of Canada Friday.
Among them are engineer Harold Orr and philanthropist Karim Nasser from Saskatoon, University of Regina president Vianne Timmons, and Fred Sasakamoose from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation near Shellbrook.
Sasakamoose is the first Indigenous hockey player to play in the NHL and his latest achievement was recognized when he dropped the puck for the ceremonial opening faceoff at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Friday.
Close to 7 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
