We live in complicated times, in a complicated world. Few things are cut and dried anymore in race, religion, politics and yes, sport.
Because of a state-sponsored doping program from the 2014 Sochi games, the Russian Olympic Committee has been suspended by the International Olympic Committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
Russians, deemed to be clean, may be able to participate under the “Olympic Athletes from Russia” banner. I’m thinking there would have been a day when the IOC would not have left that option on the table.
Evidence has revealed more than 500 positive tests from Russian athletes were falsified.
Russia sent more than 230 athletes to the Sochi Olympics.
I assume that not every Russian athlete was using illegal substances and, as a result, I don’t believe every Russian athlete should be banned from the South Korean games.
Others who believe anyone with a Russian birth certificate should be banned make a good case too. How else will the Russian sports federation and the Russian government learn?
It’s complicated.
