You can bet that a Tuesday night media report involving the NHL and the city of Houston got the attention of hockey fans in Calgary.
TSN reported that league commissioner Gary Bettman met with Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta recently to discuss the possibility of a franchise in the Texas city.
In the report, Bettman said the league is not currently looking at relocation, but did say if Houston expressed an interest it’s something owners may want to consider.
Fertitta told a Houston television station he would love to see a second NHL team in the state of Texas.
The next city that should have an NHL team, that doesn’t currently have one, is Quebec City.
The building and the fan base are in place. However, a Houston franchise would be a western conference franchise.
I don’t for a second believe the Calgary Flames are going anywhere.
This media report may be nothing more than the catalyst to getting team ownership and the City of Calgary to talk about a much needed new arena.
