The time has come for the CFL to alter its playoff format.
Purists who like East/West Grey Cup match-ups have a fundamental problem with this, but it is time to get the teams with the best records into the playoffs.
The division leaders, east and west, could get a first round bye. Then there is motivation to win your division.
The next four teams in the overall standings should then meet in the first round of the playoffs. 6 visits 3, and 5 visits 4. The winners advance to the divisional finals, where the CFL’s overall leaders face the lowest-seeded winner from round one, while the second divisional winner faces the higher seed that advances to the second round.
We are three-quarters of the way through the 2017 season, and if the the playoffs were to start today a 5-and-7 East Division team would make the playoffs, while a 6-and-6 West Division team would miss out.
It’s time to fix this.
