A Melfort man is accused of driving drunk and killing another driver in a highway crash over the long weekend.
Melfort RCMP responded to a crash between a car and truck on Highway 789 at 6:18 p.m. Saturday.
RCMP said the truck was heading east on the highway when it collided with a car going south on a grid road near Kinistino, northeast of Saskatoon.
The driver of the car, 46-year-old Quinn Shermeta from Melfort, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger, a 36-year-old woman, was taken to hospital in Saskatoon by STARS air ambulance with unknown injuries.
RCMP said the lone driver of the truck fled on foot and was arrested a short distance from the scene. He was taken to hospital in Melfort with injuries.
RCMP told 650 CKOM alcohol is believed to be involved.
As a result of the investigation, 46-year-old Troy Tolofson from Melfort is facing five charges including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene.
Tolofson made his first appearance in Melfort Provincial Court Tuesday morning. His next court appearance will be at the same courthouse on Sept. 12.
