An independent investigation is underway after a Saskatchewan RCMP officer shot a man on a northern First Nation Sunday.
According to a news release Wednesday, local RCMP members received multiple complaints of gunshots in Deschambault Lake First Nation.
While responding, a member of Deschambault Lake detachment fired his weapon.
A man was shot and received medical attention at the local nursing station. RCMP did not say where the man was injured, whether he was armed with a weapon or at what time the shooting happened.
“As per RCMP policy, a member-involved discharge of a firearm is considered a ‘serious incident,’” the news release stated.
“Therefore, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
The RCMP member involved has since been assigned to administrative duties.
Saskatoon police have agreed to conduct that external investigation and RCMP have asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.
RCMP told media Wednesday due to the external investigation, they will not provide further details or comments on the incident.
The northern community of Deschambault Lake First Nation is located around 140 kilometres west of Flin Flon.
