There’s no word on how serious his injury is, but Vince Young left Roughriders practice this morning with an injury to his hamstring.
The former NFL pivot had just entered his second week of training camp with the team after a less than impressive showing in last weekend’s mock game.
Reports from the field say that Young dropped down on the sidelines after scrambling for a first down. Trainers went to him immediately but he was able to leave the field under his own power.
Head coach Chris Jones said any injury to a quarterback is concerning, especially as he’s trying to track all of their progress.
“Anytime … you’re trying to evaluate quarterbacks when you get one hurt it’s never a positive,” Jones said.
Since Jones spoke to reporters right after practice, he didn’t have an update from the team trainers of the severity of the injury but said it was too early to say if it would set him back for this weekend’s preseason game.
“We’ll see how exactly how bad it is, evaluate it and make adjustments from there.”
Young is just one of a few big names on the green and white that have gone down with injury at camp so far. Ed Gainey, Brendon LaBatte and Jonathan Newsome were all hurt at points during the first week at camp, but have since returned. Last Wednesday 11 players sat out.
However, Jones said sometimes injuries are the price of playing contact sports.
“We need to relish this time to be able to go out and bang around and get football in us and get used to the heat and we’re not going to baby our group,” he said.
Training camp continues Wednesday in Saskatoon starting at 9 a.m.
The Riders first pre-season game goes Saturday night at new Mosaic Stadium. Kick off is at 7 p.m.
