A strike could be coming for Evraz Steel in Regina, but it’s at a very bad time.
Evraz workers voted Thursday night and 99.3 per cent said they were in favour of a strike, giving the union a strike mandate.
Both sides submitted their final offers last week in the contract talks.
According to the United Steelworkers Union Local 5890’s website, the most recent Evraz proposal last week included “significant” concessions — specifically no wage increases in the first three years, but a half a per cent in the fourth and fifth years.
The website said last week, the union would be applying for mediation in Calgary.
This comes at a bad time for Evraz. At the beginning of May it was announced 75 per cent of the steel for the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion would come from the company’s Regina plant.
On Thursday, Kinder Morgan said it would be going ahead with the expansion as long as it gets enough funding.
