Violence 5th highest cause of on the job injury in Sask.

Data released by the Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board (WCB) shows healthcare workers are the most affected by violence relate injuries on the job in Saskatchewan.

In 2016, 936 people told the WCB that they were injured by violence or aggression making it the fifth highest cause of injury.

It’s also listed as the cause of two workplace deaths.

The sectors most affected last year are as follows.

1. Healthcare
2. Social services
3. Education
4. Hospitality
5. Policing and Corrections

It’s led to the launch of a new initiative from the WCB and the Saskatchewan Association of Safe Workplaces in Health (SASWH).

According to a news release, the Provincial Violence Prevention Framework is rolling out as a pilot in health regions and will include training and education for workers and employers.

Data shows health workers have been most affected by violence over the past five years, with police and security workers rounding out the top five.

    1. Nurse Aides, Orderlies and Patient Service Associates
    2. Community and Social Service Workers
    3. Registered Nurses
    4. Police Officers (except commissioned)
    5. Security Guards and Related Occupations
