Waving signs and chanting, dozens of people took to downtown Regina for a rally on Monday.
The rally was in opposition to a recent Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) resolution lobbying for Ottawa to expand the rights of property owners to defend themselves and their property.
The resolution had passed with 93 per cent voting in favour of it.
Co-organizer Dodie Ferguson is a member of the Cowessess First Nation and she said the SARM resolution has caused her to fear for her children and relatives when they go out to rural areas.
“When we’re telling our children in today’s world to ‘sit in your car and use your cellphone to call for help’ when there may be a farm yard just down the road, that is sad,”she said.
She claimed the resolution came from a “knee-jerk reaction” and there aren’t stats that back up the reasoning for the resolution.
The rally was held on the day when the preliminary trial in the death of Colten Boushie, 22, began. Boushie was shot and killed while riding in an SUV near Biggar, Sask.
Gerald Stanley has been charged with second-degree murder in the case.
Ferguson said no matter what happens in the trial, a man’s life was cut short.
